Diplo at Zizek, Buenos Aires
Cumbia Villera is an Argentine form of cumbia music born in the shantytowns around Buenos Aires.
Since the 1930s there has been much migration from the provinces and neighbouring Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia to the greater Buenos Aires area. The many migrants brought with them their own musical and dance styles eventually giving birth to a new genre – Cumbia Villera.
Only in recent years have commercial interests started promoting Cumbia acts such as Damas Gratis and Yerbe Mate and now the genre is exploding into trendy NY and London clubs.
