From the moment I saw the sullen morose protagonist, I had my doubts about this film. But then it took us on a journey of synchronized swimmers, full of costumes and synchroninity which was fantastic to watch both visually and intellectually. Hey, I didn’t even know this sport existed! The pool camera work really was a beautiful sight. It is a pity, however, that this visual extravaganza only lasted for the initial part of the film. I was prepared to embark on a journey of friendship and sportsmanship intermixed with rivalry and excitement, but instead it took a turn for (dare I say it) the worst.
In fact, it turned into your classic lesbian adolescent film. I say “classic” because although being a teenager can be confusing and hormones are raging left right and center, there are in fact girls who are gay and girls who just like to play…I fail to see why all these films always insist on exploring the topic of female homosexuality.
In the past years, the great indie film hits have been ‘Fucking Amal’, ‘My Summer of Love’ and this film, which all happen to be about teenage lesbians. Intriguing as it is, isn’t it time someone made a film about the other type of teenage angst where it’s as simple as girls and boys liking each other?
However don’t get me wrong, in spite of the clichés I enjoyed this film. It is certainly much better than a lot of other trash that I have seen recently. The cinematography is excellent, as are the costumes. And the girls are all fun to watch without having you feeling bored or wanting to get up and leave.
For first time director Céline Sciamma, the fresh age of 27 its a great start to what I hope will be a long and interesting career.

Hey, don’t put the filmmakers down, if there’s something the world needs more, it’s teenage lesbian movies.
