There are rare occasions when glancing at a particular photograph will enthrall you to the point that you
hold your breath in admiration. When I lay my eyes on Yasmina Alaoui and Marco Guerra’s astounding photographs, I literally stopped breathing.
This creative couple (both in art and in life) has collaborated to produce a series of snapshots, One Thousand And One Dreams, which, from tomorrow, will be on display and on sale at the Opera Gallery in New York.
Marco Guerra is a renowned fashion photographer whose work has been published by the likes of Vogue and Conde Nast Traveller, whilst Yasmina Alaoui has studied sculpture and drawing at the Louvre in Paris, living and
breathing art for over 10 years. Together, they blur the boundaries between light and colour, exploring the beauty of nudity in unconventionally fascinating ways. Marco photographs his subjects in black and white, whilst Yasmina dresses these forms in drawings which she creates using china ink or watercolours, expressing ‘an emanation of the soul that would appear on the skin.’
For the couple, this project was inspired by ‘a legendary collection of tales from the Middle East, and the
magic surrealism of South American literature.’ For me, the project speaks of their limitless love and of an otherworldly creativity that arises when two souls meet on a higher plane.
