Sundays are all about lying in, freshly brewed coffee(s) and pleasant strolls to your local grocer to stock up on the week’s supplies. If you are lucky enough to be living in Amsterdam, make sure you head to the recently opened Marqt that has become the grocer of the moment. Why? Well, it’s really quite simple–quality, quality and quality.
The entire marketplace has been designed using natural materials, whilst the produce is displayed in good ol’ fashioned wooden crates. Items are sourced directly from the local farmers, who each morning bring in only the freshest in organic fruit, vegetables, fish and meat. Here the words ‘local’ and ‘personal’ are de rigueur, whilst the stainless-steel counter located at the center of the market offers scrumptiously small tasters such as crostinis and soups.
As a business model, Marqt is certainly highly innovative as it eliminates the need for retailers, enabling suppliers to gain higher margins whilst providing retailers direct contact with the very people who have grown the produce they are acquiring. In other words, Marqt is something of a hybrid, a cross between a market and a supermarket. And the most innovative part of all is that payment can only be made with plastic–no cash and certainly no coins. Make sure you also check out their newly opened store in Haarlem (Gedempte Oude Gracht 66).
