On the program for Reem Acra’s Spring ‘09 Collection presentation at Bryant Park, the designer invited those fortunate enough to have been there in person to “Travel with her through time and space to an incredible attic hidden away at the top of a royal palace”. That’s exactly where I felt I was, Thursday afternoon, watching this magnificent parade of multi-colored and bejeweled outfits stroll by, almost close enough for me to touch them. And touch them I wanted, because they looked so fantastically fluid and luxurious.
This imaginary attic atop this fictional castle contained a treasure trove of elegant outfits. Mostly partial to Ms. Acra’s dresses, the winners for me were an asymmetrical tangerine pleated number and a golden jacquard organza draped dress. But – aside from a couple of stiffer suits that would not become my personal style mantra but go wonderfully on a more “ladies who lunch” kind of woman – the collection was an all-over winner for me. Strong, bright colors combined with sexy, soft shapes are the way to go for next spring and Ms. Acra did not miss a beat!
The designer also started a trend I had not noticed at other fashion shows: BYOP. What’s that, you ask? Why “Bring Your Own Pooch” of course! With tiny teacup Poodles and miniature Maltese in tow, some – GASP! – dyed to match their owners’ outfits, the IT girls and women sat in the front row, while models weaved through them. I was incredibly distracted by one little furry creature who just cringed every time the music changed.
But with celebrity model coach J. Alexander sitting across from me displaying his usual elegance, posture and flair, and singer Ashanti in an aqua dress to die for, my attention was quickly focused on the important matters at hand – fashion! So, I’ll leave you with some thoughtful words of wisdom: Thank goodness for Reem Acra!!
