As Oscar Wilde once said, ‘A gentleman is one who never hurts anyone’s feelings unintentionally.’ And unintentionally discreet elegance is the mark of the dying breed of true gentleman.
An elegance that is exuded by Beatrix Ong‘s debut men’s collection, which hit the shelves of its refined Mayfair boutique earlier this month. Kate Moss, Sadie Frost and Mary-Kate Olsen already count as some of her most gracious fans, and without a doubt, the male glitterati from Beverly Hills to South Kensington will soon be spotted donning her handcrafted creations. Remaining faithful to her unique style, each shoe of the collection is named after prominent British film directors, embodying a truly classic dandiness. The Donner model (above) is one of our absolute favourites.
For those short trips to the country, no gentleman leaves the city without a weekend bag. For a classic yet unusual accessory, look no further than to Paris Hotel Boutique‘s vintage leather sports bag (left). Originally from the 1920s, this brown leather bag was once part of a Ralph Lauren shop display and is large enough to pack all those weekend essentials.
Another indispensable trinket for any true gentleman is an exquisite cigarette holder, such as
this sleek vintage Hermès box from the 1960s (right). This rare find made from metal and leather (also courtesy of Paris Hotel Boutique), features a removable separator and a glorious cornocupia motif on its lid. In near-impeccable conditions, this is a must-have for any monsieur.
Finally, for those gentlemen who need a little brushing up on their entertaining etiquette, make sure you dip into A Gentleman Entertains: A Guide to Making Memorable Occasions Happen by John Bridges and Bryan Curtis. Packed with plenty of helpful tips, this book covers a broad range of events ranging from cocktail soirées to family reunions, and contains observations on everything from life to martinis.
