Lip Service: Rock Star Launches Sexy Gloss Line

Theo for Kenneth ColeTheo Kogan is not your typical rocker girl. With Marilyn Monroe platinum blonde hair and retro red lips, she resembles a Varga Girl with her arms tattooed up. Her mile-long legs stopped traffic when she was recently featured in a Kenneth Cole billboard alongside Manhattan’s skylines. Aside from being a fashion model for labels like Calvin Klein and Burberry, Kogan dominated New York City’s music scene as a member of the all-female punk band Lunachicks. Today, the front woman behind Theo and the Skyscrapers can now add the title of lip gloss designer with Armour Beauty, a line where high-end fashion and rock ’n’ roll collide to create lips’ ultimate weapon.

“Lip gloss is such a staple for women!” Kogan gushes over her new collection with celebrity makeup artist Allison Burns. It seems that Kogan, like any impassioned star, has always had a love affair with makeup. From her crimson lips romancing the microphone on stage, to her perfectly lined eyes peeping from her icy locks, it’s no surprise to hear that her Park Slope apartment in Brooklyn is surrounded by cosmetics used to transform her into a fierce rock goddess. After several encounters with Burns, her idea of creating Armour Beauty was born in 2006. Unlike other products, which stick and leave mouths icky, Armour has already been described by the press as a “lip treatment” for being deliciously eco-friendly. Some of the product’s key ingredients include avocado butter, a natural sunscreen, mango oil for hydrating chapped puckers, and creamy shea butter, known for its anti-aging properties. “As makeup junkies, we worked closely with the lab to produce glosses that are super moisturizing and good for you,” says Kogan.

The results were an army of sinfully sweet-smelling glosses paying homage to the most influential rock songs, venues, and legendary icons still worshipped by many today. “Barracuda” is described by Kogan as a “true bloody red,” drawing inspiration from the aggressive hit song by Heart in 1977. “Edie” is a nude peachy beige that Andy Warhol’s favorite socialite would have worn just as much as her black tights. For those still nostalgic over hair metal, “Gazarri’s,” named after the ’80s West Hollywood club, gives a feminine touch with a shimmery baby pink hue. “Femme Fatale” is so dangerously dark, it would make Morticia green with envy. From “Princess Diana” to Kurt Cobain‘s “Nirvana,” any girl can resemble glamorous muses with dramatic, vibrant glosses that last all night long.

Fans of Kogan can catch her along with The Skyscrapers for Screen Test a creepy, rock opera directed by Rob Roth during their Halloween special at the Abrons Arts Center. In the meantime, she was happy to share some quick tips on armouring yourself with this year’s rocking lip glosses:

  • If you have large lips, you’ll always look great with lip gloss. However, if you have thin lips, lip liner makes a fantastic partner to lip gloss and accentuates a sexier mouth.
  • Never forget to blot, especially with dark colours. The last thing you want is gloss all over your teeth!
  • When it comes to colour, people don’t bother to mix things. “Femme Fatale” is sheer enough to still show your lips, so it doesn’t look like you’re wearing black marker. It’s perfect for mixing! I like to use it with purples and “Edie,” which makes a beautiful glimmering mauve.
  • Finding the right look depends on each person and you can only do that by mix and matching different products that highlight your features. I couldn’t go on stage without some eyeliner, dark mascara, or “Last Dance,” a dark, vamp look that, depending how much you layer on, can work for day or night.
