Notes of the Week

Fans of English art rejoice. An exhibition of Gavin Turk’s latest creations has just opened at the Aeroplastics Contemporary Gallery in Brussels, alongside those of four other London-based emerging artists, namely Toby Christian, Tom Crawford, Jim Hollingworth (JIMP) and Ross Downes. Located on the first floor of the gallery, Gavin Turk’s wax sculptures, silkscreen portraits and acquarelles invite visitors to question ‘the value, the authenticity, the originality and the integrity of art’ whilst looking closely at the significance of celebrities to art itself. Take a journey through the history of modern art, as Gavin points to everyone from Marcel Duchamp to Andy Warhol. So put down that box of Belgian chocolates and head over to see this display before the 8th of November.

Speaking of the significance of celebrities, Miss Paris Hilton brought Milanese traffic to a standstill yesterday as she kicked off the fashion capital’s Settimana della Moda in piazza Cinque Giornate. Thousands of fans, many of whom were adolescent girls, queued for hours in front of the Coin department store just to catch a glimpse of the heiress (who arrived a predictable 40 minutes late). A young fan was overheard speaking to her dad on her mobile, trying to explain the importance of that moment for her: ‘You don’t understand…I wonder what you would do if you were to meet James Bond.’ Yes, well, Bond or no Bond, the collection is (as expected) simply tasteless, but my hat goes off to Miss Hilton and her acute sense of business.

For those of you that are sick of hotels that hide behind the word  ’boutique’ simply to cover up for their lack of personality, then make sure you check-in to the latest accommodation concept that has just opened in Milwaukee, The Iron Horse Hotel. Targeted at motorcycle lovers, this fresh new hotel is located within a converted 100-year old downtown warehouse and features some truly rocking decor in its 102 loft-style guest rooms. Best of all, the Harley Davidson Museum is a mere stone’s throw away, so rev up those engines and book your weekend break now to take advantage of their special introductory rates.
