As the Italians have a tendency to be shorties like my little self, the models roaming freely around Via Gattamelata this week appear goddess-like and other-worldly in a way that they don’t seem to in London. Perhaps this is why the legendary Anna Piaggi managed to walk the entire length of the street and into the Milano Fashion Center without any of the camera-holders (apart from me – see my photos here) firing up their flash. My day being made already, Pucci wasn’t going to have to pull many tricks to impress me.
I was, unsurprisingly, very impressed. There was so much sparkle, so much glitter that I thought I may have died and gone to Pucci-print heaven. At times I felt it could have been Fashion On Ice due to the pieces with sheer sparkly arms, backs and middles and there was one unlucky model who felt the fall as hard as if she’d had skates on. But she got up and Lily Donaldson emerged in a floor-length sequined gown with a transparent side-slit and all was forgotten.
The prints were often imprisoned under gold or green sheaths, emerald/pistachio/snotty green being the protagonist in Pucci’s SS story. The collection was as regal as the loyal fashion royalty would like, yet space-age shoulder caps and tailored suits made it contemporary enough to be cool. Long may the revival reign.
Don’t ask me to tell you how I bagged front row seats at Luisa Beccaria. Let’s just say Italian ladies aren’t the only ones who know how to dress to get what they want, ya get me. So from my spotlight seat I could see these magnificent dresses close up – hanging threads ‘n all. There were floaty, feminine summer dresses and spectacular, Cinderella (before 12am)-worthy ruffled gowns. My favourites – the frill-lined, full-skirt suits pictured opposite – could be worn any season and I certainly won’t be waiting for another non-existent summer to pull them off the hanger.
