Prague: A Fairytale City

There exists a city the beauty of which sings like a lyrical poem that captures the hearts of those who enter its gates. With its incredible history, archaic architecture, grand churches, and annual festivals, it is a city that seems to have sprung from the pages of a fairytale. Prague, “the city of a hundred spires”, is where the impossible is made possible and the coldest of hearts fall in love.

Prague is filled to the brim with things to see, and it is practically impossible to visit everything in one visit alone. However, there are a few sites that are essential must-sees if you are traveling to this city for the first time, places that have mesmerized and inspired artists of centuries past such as Dostoevsky, Beethoven, and Mozart.

Absorb yourself in the splendor and grandeur of Prague Castle, whose corridors were once graced with the presence of kings. Although royalty no longer tread through the castle, their spirit still remains through the memorabilia they left behind. A fascinating event that takes place outside the castle gates is the changing of the guard which occurs every hour, with a unique fanfare display at noon.

The Prague Castle is a complex made up of the castle itself as well as several other historical attractions, such as Golden Lane and St. George’s Basilica. While touring the castle, you will come across not only the rooms and objects of the royal families, but also the Prague Castle Picture Gallery, a permanent collection of nearly 100 selected artistic European works out of the 4,000 that are in the sole possession of the castle.

Saint Vitus Cathedral is another site within the Prague Castle complex that must be paid a visit, if only for its magnificent Gothic architecture. The cathedral is believed to be one of the largest in Prague and of most importance, due to the royal coronations that took place in it. Built in 1344, it stands as a historical testimonial overlooking the city. Once inside, you can’t help but become enthralled with its art and splendid structural design. Before the high alter lies the royal mausoleum, and below are the tombs, which hold the bodies of the royals and saints that once ruled the city. Make sure you pay a visit to the St. Wenceslas’s Chapel, as its décor is truly stunning. If you have time, climb the cathedral’s tower for a breathtaking view of the city.
