Torino Film Festival 2008: A Roaring Success

All good things must come to an end, and so too must the 26th Torino Film Festival, which is about to draw to a close. Tonight we will finally know who the winner of this glorious edition is, and The Edge of Love, starring the gorgeous Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Cillian Murphy, shall be screened. This is definitely a film no-one is going to want to miss, and is certainly a fine closing to the event.

This movie festival has, once again, demonstrated its impeccable good taste in selecting a series of high quality, independent American movies, several interesting documentaries (make sure you don’t miss Religulous) and a handful of Asian motion pictures that are definite must-sees.

Take, for instance, Bi-mong (Dream), the first Kim Ki Duk movie to have been created in which the characters actually speak. This certainly marks a turning point in his career, as in all his previous motion pictures, hardly any character uttered a word. In Bi-mong, however, it’s all about dialogues.

Throughout this past week, interesting movie premieres were cleverly fused with three highly intriguing retrospects: one about the classic style of French director Jean-Pierre Melville, another on the creations of Roman Polanski, and–last but not least–a funky selection of 100% made in Britain movies by everyone from Julien Temple to Stephen Frears and Mike Leigh.

The screenings were scattered across several cinemas in the historic centre of Turin, allowing visitors not only to admire the town’s charm, but also to enjoy the snowy atmosphere of this former Winter Olympics capital. Finally, we mustn’t forget the host of press conferences that were held in the intimate surroundings of the Circolo dei Lettori, where even the most serious of presentations had the allure of a conversation between friends.

So as the end draws near, it can safely be concluded that this festival was a roaring success. Now we only need to wait and see who will wind the coveted prize.

But I’m quite sure we will not be disappointed.
