The Cosmopolitan: a classic drink which rose to fame on Sex and the City. However, even the girls in the movie remarked they had stopped drinking it because everyone else had started to, so I recently hit the streets of London in search of alternatives.
The Sanderson Hotel’s Long Bar is the ideal destination for sipping alternative cocktails in style, however if would rather meet the ladies for tea, head to Liberty’s intimate and friendly tea room aptly named, erm, Tea. Located on the ground floor, right next to the delicious designer handbags, this little hideaway appeals to a number of senses. With over 40 fine, loose teas from around the world, a light lunch menu and a selection of handmade cakes, it is in one word, heaven.
I found the décor, however, to be a little disappointing, with the uncomfortably cool red plastic chairs and marble top tables. With no natural light, it appeared harsh in comparison to the charm of Liberty’s whimsical period finishing, but that didn’t stop me from staying for the Liberty Champagne Afternoon Tea. My friends and I were treated to a glass of chilled champagne along with a selection of finger sandwiches, sliced cakes, fruit scones with organic strawberry jam and clotted cream, all served with freshly brewed tea.
I must have consumed my daily calorie intake in one sitting, but who cares?! This place is definitely worth a visit and is great for solo dining, work or play. For post work drinkies, try Liberty’s Oyster and Champagne Bar, which serves seafood and bubbly and is a stylish escape from the bustling West End.
On the other hand, if you would rather serve Cosmo’s in the comfort of your own home (and I can’t blame you in this weather), try this variation on the classic recipe: substitute champagne for the usual lemon vodka. Then garnish the drinks with skewers of sugar-coated fresh cranberries (thawed frozen ones will work just fine, too).
