To many, the word ‘Australia’ conjures connotations of Nicole Kidman, koalas, and Bondi Beach surfers. Yet if you take a closer glimpse into this fascinating and multicultural country, you will discover that it is absolutely teeming with highly talented fashion and jewellery designers whose creations are worthy of Parisian and Milanese runways.
One such creative is Michelle Jank, a stylistically versatile woman who has utterly revolutionised the worlds of styling, consulting and design. When she debuted at Australian Fashion Week in 2000, critics instantly fell in love with her style and since then, she has dressed the likes of Cate Blanchett, Sarah Jessica Parker and Nicole Kidman. Although she is inspired by some of fashion’s greatest, including Karl Lagerfeld and John Galliano, Michelle’s distinct flair is uniquely her own.
As down to earth as she is imaginative, Michelle has never sought the glare of the spotlight–rather, she lets her magical creations speak for themselves. Since moving to Paris in 2006, she has collaborated with some of the industry’s top stylists, including Patti Wilson for publications such as Vogue Italia and i-D , and has launched a jewellery range that continues to fly off the shelves of boutiques across the world.
One such piece is her Clear Perspex and Crystal Necklace, currently on sale at Browns in London. Its eye-catching design borne out of simplicity is proof that one doesn’t need to be decked in diamonds to turn heads on the street. It is reminiscent of her ’shattered chunks of a chandelier’ necklaces donned by models in her S/S 09 show staged last year; a collection which was inspired by Hitchcock as well as by her Parisian residence.
Remember, being fashionable isn’t just about wearing world-renowned couture labels. Rather, it is an expression of creativity and uniqueness, so broaden your perspectives and look beyond the obvious.
