Bora Aksu broke away from tradition and moved from the main tent to On|Off today. Last season, Aksu dazzled the crowd with chiffon numbers that were reminiscent of delicate dolls’ clothing. This season, however, Aksu has created a new breed of futuristic, 80’s rock-chick garments that are nothing short of showstopping.
Numerous designers have been recreating the 80’s vibe in their upcoming A/W 09-10 collections, but none had the tough stance revealed by the Aksu girls today. The colour palette, dominated by black, was accented by electric navy, green, grey and nude tones, which were somewhat muted but which allowed for details to subtly emerge. Prints were borrowed from tribal markings and Rococo style wallpaper, however this was by no means a retro collection. The prints were further embellished with details that appeared to have been ‘vaccum packed’ in plastic coating, adding to the slight ‘tribal, futurism’ look created.
Garment silhouettes were body con on top, with sheer blouses and chiffon bodices emerging as the most common shape. Featuring numerous transparent pieces with bar embellishment in essential places, Aksu also played with an origami style look. This involved a mixture of pleat and ruffle detailing that added a touch of sophistication, often counter balancing the edginess of the collection.
There was not a single pair of trousers in sight, with most skirts and dresses going for a fuller look. When not printed, skirts were made from vaporous chiffon tiers, layered up to create full shooting shapes. Nude chiffon was the staple base, enhancing the sultry see-through look. There were a couple of glorious jackets, with a high shine tux style as well as a blazer embellished with gold eyelets that added flashes of metallic to the collection. Other outerwear options also included several sheer capes with a plastic shine–this is not the first time I have seen this technique at shows this week, so it looks like the 80’s love of PVC is set to make a dramatic comeback next season.
A bold, fierce and fabulous collection, whether it will be entirely wearable is yet to be seen. However, when it comes to drama and design, Bora Aksu has nailed it yet again.
