According to New York Magazine’s fashion blog The Cut, “French Vogue is cutting back by getting rid of its coffee machine. Nonetheless, editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld and the magazine’s fashion director are attending the shows in Milan and Paris in separate chauffeured cars.”
Indeed, the show must go on. And in the fashion capital of the world, how could it not?
Rewind to the mid-1800s, when Charles Worthopened the first high fashion house (maison de couture) with live models. Sans Worth’s influence, Fashion Week may have been set on a dramatically different stage. However, Paris continues to serve as the perfect backdrop for exquisite fashion and style, as noted by a variety of blogs.
Garance Doré encourages fashionistas to view fashion from an illustrator’s perspective. The blogger observes the move toward androgny, conjuring images of Diane Keaton in Annie Hall in no-nonsense silhouettes and clean lines.
Reading La Coquette: Don’t Hate Me Just Because I Live in Paris is especially entertaining since the blog is written by an American who returns to her French roots later in life. Commenting on American ‘urban chic’, the writer cautions, “If your name be not Mary Kate, wear ye not all thine accessories at once.”
Paris may be a creative centre and fashion melting pot, but its signature look is sleek and stunning. Classic black and white elements (think Coco Chanel and Creative Director Karl Lagerfeld), beautifully cut coats, and strategic accessories will be forever chic.
Remember, you can look to the runway but to keep up with the word on the street, check out the blogs above and The Sartorialist for a Parisian fashion fix.
