Jasmina Anema, who has Leukemia, gets a birthday visit from Kelly Rowland
It’s not every day that a six year old is serenaded by a pop star, but Kelly Rowland played fairy godmother and made a birthday wish come true for little Jasmina Anema. The former Destiny’s Child diva was touched by the story of the young girl diagnosed with a rare and terminal form of leukemia just six weeks ago. But Kelly isn’t the only celeb who’s standing up to help this young girl fight for her life; Rihanna is also spreading the word.
The songstresses are raising public awareness to find a bone marrow donor for Jasmina, who is currently at NYU Medical Center with her mother keeping a constant vigil.
“A few weeks later, she did have chemotherapy and the hair was falling out and the whole disease becomes a reality,” Theodora Anema told PIX News. “It’s just something I wouldn’t wish on any parent.”
The solution to save this innocent child’s life is clear – find a bone marrow donor. But the process is far from simple. The fact that Jasmina was adopted and has no siblings makes it even more difficult to find a match. And the low number of African Americans listed in the national donor drive doesn’t provide much hope either.
“It’s urgent and chemotherapy alone won’t cure this leukemia, so we have a great challenge ahead of us,” said Jasmina’s doctor, Dr. William Carroll.
Kelly Rowland and Rihanna’s efforts provide a glimmer of optimism for Jasmina. Not only did the stars do DNA tests, they also organised a bone marrow drive last Saturday at Jasmina’s school.
Over 1600 people turned up at PS41 for the DNA test, which involves a simple swab of the cheek, and donations were collected to help fund Jasmina’s mounting medical bills. The silver lining? If the DNA matches that of another patient, the drive could save the lives of others.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the celebritans’ efforts will pay off. International donors are welcome- do your part by visiting www.oneforjasmina.com and ordering a DIY bone marrow test kit.
