As summer rapidly approaches, the last thing on the mind of many a sunbathing beauty is the type of sunblock they’ll be slapping onto their skin before stepping out into the sizzling heat. If you happen to be one such beauty, then you may want to think again.

Not only does the proper sunblock protect your skin from harmful sun rays, but it can also prevent unsightly skin peeling and save you from nasty sunburns. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, ultraviolet rays are a form of invisible radiation that changes the structure of skin cells, making unprotected exposure to the sun one of the leading causes of skin cancer, premature aging and changes in skin texture. A sunscreen’s sun protection factor (SPF) measures how much the product shields the sun’s shorter-wave ultraviolet B rays, which cause sunburn. This is why dermatologists now advise using sunscreens with an SPF of at least 15 and which contain UV-fighting ingredients, such as an avobenzone, that do not degrade in light.

This season, brands are releasing sunscreens with some of the highest SPF numbers on record.  Topping the charts for the best sun-protecting products this season are Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF 100+ with Helioplex , Banana Boat Ultra Defense Sunscreen SPF 85  and, for those with sensitive skin, Clinique Sun SPF 50 Body Cream. If you’re still confused over which product is best for you, try Sephora’s Sun Safety Kit, which includes an array of skin-protecting products that will help you find the sunblock that best suits to your needs. For a meager price and a free tote, it’s the least you can do for your skin.

So before you grab your bottle of baby oil or your favorite tanning lotion and head for a day on the beach, think twice and take a moment to protect yourself.
