Switzerland is renowned for its old world charm and taste for luxury, and Zurich’s Dolder Grand perfectly embodies both traditions. Its combination of impeccable service and panoramic views make this five star hotel and spa an absolute gem.

Although the Dolder is one of the city’s most celebrated landmarks, it is also one of the most commonly missed by visitors to the city. Located about a fifteen minute drive from downtown Zurich, this retreat is situated on a wooded hillside that overlooks Lake Zurich and the city below. Originally built as a health spa in 1899, the Dolder is reminiscent of a castle plucked from the pages of a Brothers Grimm fairytale book, and the evocative setting is only enhanced by the view of the Alps in the distance.

Inside, the architecture and design cater to aesthetic gratification.  Whether you are enjoying a cocktail in the historic library, or gazing at the stars from your in-suite Jacuzzi through the floor-to-ceiling windows, you will not be disappointed.

The state of the art spa wing designed by Sylvia Sepielli is a recent addition to the hotel, but blends in perfectly with the restored main building. Renovations have compromised neither the authentic charm nor the commitment to wellness around which the resort originally centered. Make sure you head down to the world class health and beauty spa for a Pilates class, couples massage, or simply to relax in the outdoor whirlpool.

Although 24-hour room service is available, the hotel’s two restaurants easily entice you out of bed. The Garden Restaurant has a beautiful terrace upon which you may enjoy your morning paper and eggs Benedict.  The other, simply called The Restaurant, lives up to its presumptuous name, serving innovative cuisine that will challenge taste buds you did not know you had.

Such an enchanting environment can be difficult to leave, but resist temptation and explore some of the delights that Zurich has to offer. Shuttle and car services are provided into town regularly. Take a stroll down the Bahnhofstrasse, and once those designer shopping bags become too heavy, stop at Balthazar for a flatbread pizza or for a dash of people watching over a cup of coffee. Walk along the lakeside and step into one of the many fabulous restaurants that overlook the lake. For a truly Swiss fine dining experience, make sure you book a table at Sonnenberg.  One of the fifty best restaurants in the city, guests can savour poached egg on Swiss chard, veal cutlet with risotto and fine wine, all while absorbing the spectacular view rivaling that of the Dolder.

The Dolder Grand is the ultimate romantic getaway, reflecting the culture and country to which it belongs.  History collides with the avant-garde to produce an overall commitment to excellence and luxury in every sense of the word.
