Staying true to its creative roots, French powerhouse Louis Vuitton recently launched Louis Vuitton: A Passion for Creation at the Hong Kong Museum of Art.
A star attraction of the 17th Le French May, the largest French Arts Festival in Asia-Pacific, the exhibition is split into three sections honouring the brand’s 150 year artistic history through diverse media.
The Collection, A Choice features photography, paintings and digital animation portraying urban culture from leading European, American and Chinese artists. Luminaries include Andreas Gursky and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Additionally, the exhibition taps into the local art scene by showcasing works from seven emerging Hong Kong artists.
Louis Vuitton and Art is dedicated to the brand’s heritage and showcases luggage from the Louis Vuitton Museum in Asnières. Highlights include creative collaborations with designer Marc Jacobs and artists Stephen Sprouse, Takashi Murakami and Richard Prince. Most notably, the latter was commissioned to wrap the museum exterior with graphic images of pulp-fiction novels. Inspired by Prince’s After Dark series, the building creates an artistic landscape in panoramic Victoria Harbour.
Finally, The Architectural Project presents a large scale model depicting architect Frank Gehry’s design for the Fondation Louis Vuitton pour la Création in Paris. Slated for completion in 2010, the building reflects the spirit and inspirations of the Fondation.
Chief curator Tang Hoi-Chiu describes the exhibition as “A good way to stimulate creative dialogue.”
So if you’re an art or fashion fiend, pack your Louis Vuitton bag, don your creative cap, and discover what happens when art and fashion collide.
Louis Vuitton: A Passion for Creation runs till Aug 9 at HK Museum of Art
