Blue blood, celebrities, and native New Yorkers turned out in style for the second Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic. Held on May 30, the annual event coincided with the opening of the official season of Governors Island and was the first in a series of events commemorating the 400th anniversary of New York.
The fundraiser benefited Sentable, a charity established by Prince Harry in memory of his mother, the late Princess Diana. With the Prince in attendance and a star-studded turnout including Madonna and Kate Hudson, the event provided the perfect opportunity to people watch. Champagne flowed as celebrities clamoured under the tents and the public was treated to a magnificent polo spectacle.
Veuve Clicquot Business Director Samantha Barnes discusses the event…
Why was Governor’s Island the ideal venue for Veuve Clicquot’s annual polo match?
Polo was played regularly on Governors Island when it was an Army base. The last match was played there in the 1940’s. Hosting the event has been an exciting way for Veuve Clicquot to revive the sport in Manhattan and honour part of New York City’s history.
Does Veuve Clicquot plan to host additional events on Governor’s Island?
Not at this time. We are focused on building the Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic to be the premier daytime event to kick off the summer season.
Why did the event attract so many celebrities?
Since it was Prince Harry’s first official visit to New York, many socialites and celebrities were interested to attend and be a part of the day, as well as the general public. Also, Nacho Figueras has a strong following with supporters such as Madonna and Marc Jacobs.
Tell us about the trophy.
The trophy was designed by Asprey…Each year, the winning team’s name will be engraved on the base and handed over to the next year’s victor.
Why was Sentebale the charity of choice?
Sentebale was founded by Prince Harry in 2004 in collaboration with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho to transform the lives of Lesotho’s orphans and vulnerable children. Being able to have Prince Harry play in the Manhattan Polo Classic and raise money for his charity was a natural combination.
How successful was the event?
It was a beautiful day and I was so pleased to welcome guests to the island for a day of champagne and spirited sport—all for a worthy cause. Whether people were in the VIP tent, having a champagne picnic on the lawn or on the public side free of charge, everyone was having fun.
How much champagne was consumed?
Over 5,000 flutes of champagne were served!
