If you’ve visited H&M lately, you will probably have come face-to-face with cardboard celebs wearing stylish T-shirts sporting an important message. From Katy Perry’s cartoon heart print to Dita Von Teese’s glam profile, the designs range far and wide but the theme remains the same: safe sex.
Fashion and entertainment icons including Estelle, Robyn and Cyndi Lauper, have joined hands with H&M and Designers Against AIDS (DAA) for the second Fashion Against AIDS campaign.
“The aim of the collection is to raise money and increase awareness of HIV/AIDS and at the same time, give our customers stylish clothes”, said H&M PR Director Jennifer Uglialoro.
Made from 100% organic cotton, the collection includes T-shirts, T-shirt dresses, bodysuits and vests. One of the most popular T-shirts is designed by hip-hop band N.E.R.D and features the words “USE YOUR” printed on top of a brain.
Lead singer Pharrell Williams explains why N.E.R.D jumped on the Fashion Against AIDS bandwagon: “With the right precautions, we can save a lot of lives. I think that entertainers taking a stand and getting in line to fight on the frontlines of this war is a good thing…I hope it helps to spread this good message and good energy out there.”
H&M contributes 25% of all sales to youth HIV/AIDS awareness projects including DAA, YouthAIDS, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and MTV Staying Alive Foundation.
“We come into contact with millions of young people every day through our 1,700 stores in 34 countries. This is also one of our target groups, so contributing to the cause and highlighting the situation feels like the natural thing to do,” said Uglialoro.
Limited edition T-shirts that promote HIV/AIDS awareness? That’s one fashion trend we’ll follow with pride.
