The use of fragrance as an olfactory aphrodisiac dates back thousands of years to the times of the early Egyptians. With humble origins in essential oils, flowers and herbs, fragrances have evolved into innovative beauty essentials thanks to sophisticated scientific research and chemical infusions.
Yet, misting ourselves with fragrance, we rarely consider the psychological and physiological effects of this scent-sual tool. According to Dr. Alan Hirsch, certain scented oils cause increased blood flow to erogenous areas, resulting in sexual arousal.
With this in mind, popular perfumers have used this knowledge to their advantage. By combining the scents of known aphrodisiacs with synthetic pheromones, they create potent olfactory elixirs. With the development of edible fragrances ranging from Burger King’s meat-flavoured body spray Flame to Jessica Simpson Dessert, creativity knows no bounds and scientists have long heralded the use of taste and smell to enhance sexual chemistry.
Now before you run off to your favourite beauty shop, keep in mind that as with all things in life, moderation is key. A little goes a long way as overpowering scents can send your partner running in the opposite direction.
