X-Factor: Real adventure in unreal style
The Buzz: Explorer Jack Bousfield set up this Kalahari Desert camp beneath an acacia in the early sixties whilst exploring the Botswanan Salt Pans. Following in the footsteps of his father, Ralph Bousfield and his partner Catherine Raphaely refurbished the camp in 2003, constructing ten extravagant canvas tents in the East African 1940’s safari style. En-suite bathrooms are outfitted with indoor and outdoor showers and while there is no electricity, paraffin lamps offer an authentic safari experience. Comfort is never compromised with pure cotton sheets, down pillows and bone-handled silver cutlery making an understated style statement.
Eco Features: In 2009, Jack’s Camp was awarded the Best Ecological Safari Camp Award. All buildings are constructed from sustainable Zimbabwean teak, while fridges, freezers and geysers are powered by solar energy.
Must-Do: Explore the wilderness with Zu/’hoasi Bushmen trackers and afterwards, marvel at the sunset over the Makgadikgadi Pans, the remains of the world’s largest super-lake. Stay out a little later and watch the night sky light up in a dazzling planetarium show.
Icing on Cake: Indulge in a scrumptious high tea at the Tea Tent, which is adorned with plush Persian carpets and cushions.
Out and About: In the dry season, venture into the core of the Makgadikgadi on 4wd quad bikes and explore remote archaeological sites, chancing upon fossil beds of extinct giant zebra and hippo. In the wet season, experience the migration of zebra and wildebeest, the last remaining in South Africa.
